Time to Cowboy Up America. New Orleans needs our help and expertise. Over 75 horses have been found and several hundred head of cattle and no one with any knowledge about them. We are now looking for volunteers to go to New Orleans and help out on this giant event of nursing these animals back to health while a search for the owners are underway. As we all know some of the owners may not be coming back due to the death toll. We all understand and except that fact. We are looking for other large groups as ourselves to help spread the word.

Your accommodations will be as rustic as you can imagine...make sure you bring everything you will need to sustain yourself during your stay. These items might include things like:

Tents, lanterns, portable shower, air mattress (bed-roll), extra socks, lightweight airy clothing, extra high energy/non perishable food, digital camera etc.use your best judgment and keep in mind that the environment is brutal. It smells, it's hot and the bugs are a nightmare (so bring bug spray). What more can a Cowboy ask for?

For our Cowboys and Cowgirls we need halters, lead ropes, and just about anything that you can think of even if its used. Do you know of a farmer who has year old hay or two year old hay? We need it all. Bring your Cowboy hats and knowledge.

Lets all show America what the Cowboys and Cowgirls are made of:

COWBOY UP AND VOLUNTEER NOW..

Here is the letter that started it all.

I am Donna Bracewell Foster Coordinator for Disaster Response Animal Rescue. We are a grassroots non-profit organization based out of Athens, GA. We have been in New Orleans doing small animal rescue since the beginning. We have rescued over 3000 animals and been able to reunite some of them. The reason I am contacting you is this: We were contacted by someone in Plaquemines Parish in NO. to come to see the horses and cattle that had been left with no care. We went in yesterday and found much to our surprise 75 horses and a lot of cattle that have had no medical care or access to food for quite sometime now. We believe they have owners but probably got away during the storm. Some of them have not been handled before. We do not have access to large animal supplies, care or cowboys. I saw on your web site that there are still real cowboys and cowgirls and from the site that is what we need. I am in direct contact with the founder/rescuer who is in the field there. I would really appreciate any help or information you could pass to me. We have contacted several of the large organizations and vet schools but they are saying that we have to file this and that and long term that may be helpful but right now these guys do not have any hay, halters, lead ropes or any other supplies. Any ideas? Thank you so much, I understand that you may already helping in other ways but any information or help would be great.

Thank you and I will look forward to hearing from you,
Donna Bracewell

UPDATE:

Great Job America we did it. This was one of the fastest turn around times we have had to date. Our Cowboy Volunteers have Cowboy'd Up and moved in fast, moving these animals to a suitable environment.

The disaster is not over; the total job is not complete. They still need water, hay, feed of all types, t-posts, barbwire, Cowboys and Cowgirls to run the fence lines. Remember everything that people had down there was covered in salt water and is now rotten, destroyed, or just plain unserviceable anymore. (Don't forget about all the Wildlife as well)

Rescue Ranch took in 7 head of the wild herd of horses from Venice and says "These babies have never been touched by humans . They are 1 & 2 yr olds . We need savey horse man that can donate their time to assist in gentling these babies so we can vet them and start a good proper learning foundation for them to become serviceable mounts . Several of them are colts ."

Be on call and keep checking this page and our forum because we now have a direct line with them down there. They are also looking for animal rescue volunteers if you are interested so we will keep our email up and going; also they may still find other larger animals such as more horses and cattle. They still need hay and some supplies!!

Thank you ahead of time for the amount of emails we have received over this event and we will continue to push forward with this and collecting all used tack (new too) as well.
