Cowboy Questions:
- Do Cowboys always wear Cowboy Boots?
A: No all Cowboys do not wear Cowboy Boots, but with the name Cowboy Boot a majority of Cowboys do wear them.
- How does a Cowboy dress?
A: A typical Cowboy will be wearing a button up shirt, or t-shirt with a western theme, a pair of Jeans that have the cuffs of the pants over his Cowboy Boot shaft, a Belt Buckle (of course a belt too) and a Cowboy Hat. A Bandana may be worn around his neck, if he is riding a Horse, to be used for several different things. If the Cowboy is
“out-west” he may even be wearing a Holster with a gun in it and a set of chaps to help with the brush.
- Do all Cowboys chew tobacco?
A: No all Cowboys
do not chew tobacco.
- Do Cowboys prefer to wear Cowboy Hats to regular Ball Caps?
A: This would depend on what activity that the Cowboy was performing. Sometimes it is not feasible to wear a Cowboy Hat but it is the most preferred headgear for the Cowboy.
- Do all Cowboys drink Beer?
A: All Cowboys do not drink beer, some drink Whiskey.
- Do all Cowboys drink Whiskey?
A: Ok maybe I shouldn’t have joked about this in our Beer question. All Cowboys do not drink beer or whiskey, some are in AA. Some do not touch alcohol at all.
- Do Cowboys always wear pearl snap shirts?
A: Your answer is a simple as saying NO. This shirt was popular back with the
old-western-movies. Thru our research we have found out that about 98% of "button" up shirts today that you get from whole sellers are snap front. For example the only button up wrangler makes is from the
George Strait Collection and authentic old western shirts are from Scully and Wah Maker and they button they do not snap; movies are not always authenticlly correct.
- Why is the Cowboy an American Symbol?
A: The Cowboy is an American Symbol due to his resilience and steadfast personality. America is only as big and powerful today due to the Cowboy heading out West to settle it, with his tools of his trade, which were Barbwire and his gun. He contains the last vestiges of wildness allowed in the new millennium, and as much as America changes, he has always remained the same. America needs the Cowboy both to remind us of how far we have come and to bring us back to the simplicity of the values he represents. He is also needed because he is a piece of who we are as a country. He represents a lifestyle and a time period that is a cherished part of our History. Little boys want to grow up to be him and the little girls want to grow up to marry him.
- Where do people still wear Cowboy Hats in the U.S.?
A: In every state of the Union people still wear Cowboy Hats. Nowhere in the near future is the Cowboy Hat going to become extinct. As a matter of fact it may be just the opposite with the immigration fight on full blast. America is screaming to have her symbol of pride back, which is becoming the American Cowboy once again. One last point on this question is that people all around the World wear Cowboy Hats, yes even in Iraq while soldiers are serving their Country. Take a look at the Desert Cowboys and be awed.
- How do I become a Ranch Hand?
A: First thing out the gate you have to find a Rancher that is looking and willing to accept you into his family ranch. You have to realize it is not as simple as walking up to an old Cowboy and telling him you want to work for him. With lawsuits running ramped across America you have to think from their perspective, they do not want to lose it {their Ranch} because someone new did something stupid or irresponsible.
- Do all Cowboys work on Farms and Ranches?
A: No, the cement crawl and land grabbers have pretty much closed down most family owned Ranches and Farms. The City Slicker Cowboys and Dime-Store-Cowboys of today are just as important as a Rancher or Farmer who are still tilling up the land or pushing cattle. I know I will get a lot of hate mail about this answer but I stick by it. It gives the impression that we are still alive and it is important that we don’t fade off into the dust with our tractors.
- What is the loose term that describes the time that begins (unofficially) after the Reno Rodeo in Nevada and runs through the 4th of July weekend?
A: This is called, “Cowboy Christmas” and it is one of the most important times to Rodeo Cowboys as any other in a calendar year. This is the highest paying Rodeo day’s events around today.
- Do all Cowboys wear Wranglers?
A: No, all Cowboys do not wear Wranglers, some wear Carhartt, some wear Levis, some wear many other brands. There are boot-cut jeans that are a little bigger at the ankle to be able to accommodate the boot shaft.
- How did Garth Brooks Cowboy Shirts and Brooks and Dunn Cowboy Shirts start?
A: The American Cowboy was at an all time high and designers where just itching to make money. Color came up as a catchy selling point. Flame patterns and custom shirts were just an evolution of design.
- Do all Cowboys play Horseshoes?
A: No.
- What is the preferred Pick-up truck brand to a Cowboy?
A: This is a toss up, depending on whom you talk to. But for years FORD has been a hands down winner on this subject. FORD, which is Synonymous with the Modern Cowboy, has become the working mans truck. For years now Ford has not advertised towards the Cowboy and others have stepped up and started to fill this void, such as DODGE.
Before anyone asks why I say Ford is Synonymous with the Cowboy first thing lets look at the word Synonymous and you get:
Identical
The same
One and the same
Equal
The next thing you would look at is which Cowboy are we talking about?
Wyatt Earp in Tombstone
You in Tombstone
These two people live in two different eras. The Cowboy back in Tombstone 1880 would not have ridden in a Pick-Up-Truck because they were not invented yet. So we must be talking about the modern Cowboy, who does drive in Trucks.
You would not have to even ask what truck a Cowboy was driving 20-30 years ago. You were not a true Cowboy if you didn’t own a Ford and drove one of those other “Sissy Trucks”. It was hands down, Ford the truck of choice, and that has rolled over into their children and their children’s children.
It took Ford years of advertising directly towards the Cowboy community and millions of dollars to gain the reputation that it has from the Cowboys.
In the last 15-20 years they have backed off and the market is starting to slip. Myself I drive a Dodge Ram 1500 4X4 Crew cab while I go to work and to town. But out on the Ranch I do drive my Ford. It (Ford) has the reputation of being a workhorse; ever wonder how that phrase came to be? To compare a Truck to a Horse!?!
Dodge has started taking over a large percentage of the market but has yet to catch up with Ford’s reputation of being Tough, “Ford Tough”, even though they do not directly advertise towards the Cowboy anymore. Now they (Ford) advertise towards working men, construction and the general public.
So I do believe the Ford Trucks are synonymous with the Modern Cowboy because of there use on and around the Ranching / Farming community and it was directed that way by the Ford Motor Company. The majority of working trucks around Ranches / Farms would be hands down winner of “FORD”.
I hope this helps in my definition and explanation of why I said Ford was synonymous with the Cowboy. It was their advertising dollar that put them there. In up coming years if they do not pick up the advertisement directly towards the Cowboy I do believe that Dodge has a great chance of taking the top spot in this market.
- Do all Cowboys smoke?
A: I would not say all Cowboys smoke; I couldn’t or wouldn’t even say that most Cowboys smoke. There is the American movement for anti Tobacco that is on an overwhelming increase each year that goes by. So there may be no one smoking with the next ten years.

A: Yes most Cowboys wear t-shirts at one time or another. Be sure to wear one that has pictures of Fishing, Hunting, Horses, Western pictures, Established Ranches or name-brand western products.
- Why Do Cowboys Wear Boots?
A: The origins of the Cowboy boot are well researched and started life as riding boots for the marauding Mongol tribesmen. The Cavalry issued the Cowboy Boot (as Cavalry Boots), which were mass-produced using, reinforced cardboard. In the 1900s, the first embroidered toe wrinkle boots were made and the earliest of Actors wore them on screen outside of their Jeans. The upper part of the Cowboy Boot is wider because if a rattle snake or other snakes were to bite at you leg it would get the leather and not your leg, so it's a "saftey net" for you.
Today, most Cowboys do not wear pointed toed boots. Now a days we wear round-toed boots. The Original Cowboy Boot was pointed due to the fact that the wearers spent a good amount of the day in a saddle, boots in the stirrups, and this allowed their feet to slip out of the stirrup easier to avoid hang-ups.
- What is another word for a Cowboy's rope?
A: A Lariat.
- Why was a Cowboy Hat so important to Cowboys?
A: The typical Cowboy hat could have been pretty much any hat of that era. The wider brims were meant to keep the Sun out of their eyes. Nowadays the hat is more of a symbol of who you are and if you are a real cowboy or not. The older the dirtier it was the truer you are. Straw hats are for summer and felt hats are for wintertime.
- How does a Rodeo Cowboy dress?

- Do all Cowboys play the guitar?
A: No some Cowboys are as tone deaf as any City Slicker out there.
- Do Cowboys always wear spurs?
A: Spurs are designed to help with riding horses. Some Cowboys like their spurs so much that they wear them all the time. I have been known for walking around with my spurs into Wal-mart or in the streets of Tombstone to Detroit. It is just a symbol of who we are as an American Symbol.
- Do Cowboys prefer to wear chaps or not?
A: Chaps are designed for riding only. Rodeo Cowboys can wear them around a Rodeo Arena. Sometimes if a Cowboy is wearing one it could be for a specific reason, making speeches, movie or a performance. But there is always an exception to every situation. Someone somewhere will always wear whatever he or she want for whatever reason.

A: No we prefer that the City Slickers do not know how to shoot.
- What are the daily duties of a Cowboy?
A: A typical day would consist of ensuring the water is running and feeding of the cattle before the rest of the world even gets out of bed. After you’ve penned in the Cattle you will have to move, you would return back to the Ranch-house to eat breakfast. Once you eat you would head out and separate the Cattle into Auction Cattle and Branding Cattle is complete then you can start riding the fence line and mend the fences. Once you have finished that you would return home or talk to them over the CB and find out if they need anything. At this point usually one or two Cowboys would head into town and pick up any supplies that are needed. Upon return you would drop off the goods at the house and head back out to feed at night and sit and just watch the property against trespassers (partiers).
- How many days off does a Cowboy get in a year?

A: No once again City Slickers are exempt from carrying any sort of weapons, to include knifes.

A: We go to the “City” and take “City-Tours”. This is the exact opposite of City Slickers going to a Dude Ranch for vacation, we get to go to Corporate America and see the Stock Market.
- Why was the first Cowboy Clowns introduced?
A: The answer to this is a two-fold answer:
- As Entertainment: They were introduced as soon as the Rodeo actually started; they were so popular because they kept the crowd entertained in-between events. The biggest thing that was needed was entertainment while preparing for another Rodeo event to start.
- As a Safety Net: It is their job to ensure the Cowboy remains safe during and after their ride or event.

A: No we would have to say that most Cowboys do not travel all over, with the exception of the Rodeo Cowboy. But most Cowboys do know the land that they are living close to like the back of there own hand. Cowboys are outdoors people.

A: Riding Horseback, Fishing, Hunting, Horseshoes, BBQ, anything family orientated for the married and Dancing (yes married western people like this too) and Drinking for the singles.
- Which Cowboy killed the most people?
A: This is an impossible question to answer. Depending on who is writing about which person you will get a different answer. You could say it was Doc Holiday or Billy the Kid, or Wild Bill Hickock. But, the answer isn’t as simple as this. Think about how many Cowboys were out West. Then think of how many got wrote about, some of the most notorious I can guarantee you never even got a story written about them and they would be the most famous. Some made headlines and some got credit for those who stayed in the shadows. Billy the Kid had killed 21 men by the time he was 21, that’s one man for every year he was alive, that’s kind of impressive.
- Who was the worst Cowboy ever?
A: No Cowboy was the worst Cowboy ever. Anyone who is born or turned into a Cowboy is one of the elite groups that we call our Brother or Sister (Cowgirl). We accepted all Cowboys as an elite member of Cowboy Crew.
- How many real Cowboys are alive today?
A: This is almost impossible to determine. What is it that makes a person a Cowboy would have to be the first thing determined? Some of the people that would be classified as a Modern Cowboy would consider themselves a RedNeck or a Hillbilly. So determining how many in each classification would be almost impossible.
- Was there ever a Cowboy that never killed anyone?
A: Yes, throughout history there have always been people who refused to fight and were strictly family orientated or good hearted in nature.
- What makes a person a Cowboy?
A: A Cowboy is a person who is dedicated to the Country Western lifestyle. They are Farmers, Ranchers, Poets, Singers, Ranch Hands, and a countless number of other people who day to day keep what we believe as the true turning point in America history, Country alive. They are the only followers in the footsteps that we know of as our ancestors. Helping keep our history alive, it was the Cowboy who rode west and created America from Sea to shining Sea.
But if you really want to get technical a Cowboy is someone who works with Cows. A great Cowboy would have knowledge on Cows and Horses and be able to perform daily choirs on Horseback. But if we start breaking down everyone in different categories than those who want to defeat the Cowboy and see him vanish forever has already won. So I will stick with my first answer.
- Who is the best Country Western singer, Western Cowboy Star or Country Symbol?
A: This would depend on whom you talk too. Garth Brooks has sold the most albums and has the largest gathering bar-none. So you could consider him the best, but there are so many different entertainers and Rodeo stars, such as Lane Frost, that you would have to narrow your search to the most popular in search inquiring on the Internet or the most records sold. Also you have to consider the Actors (John Wayne) who have played Cowboys.
- What type of pay does a Cowboy receive?
A: Minimum wage at best as a typical Ranch Hand. Trail Boss’ receive more and Ranch owners receive the most, but they also pay out the most and have the most to lose.
- Because someone rides in a Rodeo does that make him a Cowboy?
A: Just because someone rides in one Rodeo one time does not make that person a Cowboy.
- How does a modern Cowboy differ from one in the olden days?
A: Mostly they are only separated by technology. In the olden days buying a washing machine would have been a big deal and today buying a 64” Plasma TV is a big deal. But the modern Cowboy would be exactly the same as the olden days, think about if the Cowboy in the 1800 wouldn’t have used a cell phone if it were available? Yes they would. They would have used anything they had at the time too include Propane, Sunglasses, Cell phones, Trucks, Trailers, and just about anything that we use today to lend a hand at making things easier.

- Are there Cowboys in Canada?
A: Yes there are! You do not have to be an America Patriot to be a Cowboy although it sure does help.
- Can Cowgirls do the same things as Cowboys?
A: I do not see any reason why a Cowgirl can’t do anything that the Cowboy can do. It is up to the individual who is involved in each event. A Cowgirl can ride, rope, saddle and bronco with the best of them. So my answer is defiantly YES.
- Why do a lot of Cowboys wear big belt buckles?
A: This is for personal reasons. Cowboy Belt Buckles were invented as a prize for, “Ride for the Brand”, competitions that used to take place with local Ranchers to compete against each other. Their Brand was placed on the Belt Buckles and it became a status. So bigger meant better, now-a-days it is more of a pride thing that they wear belt buckles and show that, yes I am a Cowboy.
- What is the purpose of Spurs?
A: Spurs where designed to help control a horse. When riding especially on uneven or unfamiliar terrain it can give the horse the little extra boost that he or she may need to go up a hill or down a draw.
- Do Cowboys put Beef Jerky under their Saddle?
A: I have personally heard of this several times. When I asked why they do that, they explain that it warms up the Jerky and keeps it moist so it doesn’t dry out. I do not know if there are any documented cases on this but this is what I have heard. The next time I am at my friends Ranch and we ride I will take pictures of this and post it here.
- Was Paul Bunion ever a real Cowboy?
A: Paul Bunion was considered a Lumber Jack not a Cowboy. But, once again if you could define what is a Cowboy he may just fall into the category.
- Due to the pointed toes do Cowboy Boots hurt your feet?
A: Depending on the degree of the tip of the Cowboy Boot, yes improper fitted boots can hurt, but mostly no they do not. If you wear Cowboy Boots that are too small and have an extreme tip to them you could actually make your toes and/or toe nails curl inwards and your toes and feet will ache.
Properly fitted Cowboy Boots should not hurt you toes no matter the how extremely narrow the toe is your toe should not hit the toe box at all if it does its to small or you need a wide with (ee for men, c for women) if you buy a proper fitting boot when you buy it, it should be snug all over and slip up to a inch and a half in the heel until the boot breaks in. So no the toe should not hurt at all.
- How much beef can you get off of a Cow?
A: If you take a typical Beef Carcass and Break it down it would work out like this:
With an average market (live or on hoof) weight of 1,150 lbs and the average yield of 62.2%, the typical steer will produce a 715 lb. (dressed weight) carcass.
The dressed beef (or carcass) will yield approximately 569 lbs. of red meat and trim (take home meat - which includes the average weight of 27 lbs of variety meat: liver, heart, tongue, tripe, sweetbreads and brains) and 146 lbs of fat, bone and loss. This is roughly a yield of 80% from the dressed or hanging weight - this is for a VERY LEAN Beef.
A High Quality, USDA Choice Beef will yield approximately 70% of the Hanging or Dressed Weight. The yield on the take home meat weight from the live weight of the (VERY LEAN) steer is approximately 50%.
- What makes a bull buck in Rodeo’s?
A: A Bull can buck for several reasons; here are a couple of them.
- The weight of the Cowboy being on his back (which he is not used to)
- A Flank Strap being placed on him (which irritates the heck out of ‘em)
- A bell placed under him (which scares him more than anything)
- What is a Flank Strap?
A: A Flank Strap is a padded strip of leather that is placed in front of a bull’s back legs to irritate or attempts to create a little pain in that area. Imagine yourself wearing a belt that you cinch down as far as you possibly can and you could get the basic concept down.
- Has there ever been a competition between a Cowboy and Cowgirl bailing hay?
A: Yes one that we know of where the Cowboy did beat the Cowgirl but only by three bails, which is not much if you think about it.
If you know of another one, please email us with a short description of it and we will post it here.
- What kind of horse was Black Beauty?
A: An Arabian Stallion.
- Has anyone ever beat Lane Frost’s record for riding Red Rock?
A: As you know we have been in touch with the Lane family and we will get a quote from them personally on the subject.
- Are saddles expensive?
A: This would depend on what type of saddle you purchase and what your definition of expensive is. You can get a new saddle for under $100. You could on the other hand spend upwards to 5-10 thousand dollars on one to have it custom made.
- What is the most expensive Cattle brand?
A: I believe you mean what is the most expensive Cattle Breed?
The Black Angus is the most expensive Cattle to purchase. This was done when several Ranchers got together and started buying each other’s cattle at outrageous amounts and started tracking their bloodline. This opened the door for pure breed Black Angus.
- Has there ever been an Albino cow?
A: Yes there have been.
Definition of
Albino:
- A person or animal lacking normal pigmentation, with the result being that the skin and hair are abnormally white or milky and the eyes have a pink or blue iris and a deep-red pupil.
- A Plant that lacks chlorophyll.
We are not talking plants here so we can throw out number 2. But with animals it has been recorded throughout history of special animals that stand out from the rest of the crowd. We have collected pictures of Albino Cows, Deer, Moose, and a ton of other animals that have been born without their normal pigmentation. If anyone has any Albino pictures of animals we do collect them and you could e-mail them to us here.
- When was the first Rodeo?
A: This has been highly debated for several years. I will give you an answer that no one else will give you and it will be the truth.
No one knows. They were probably held back in the early 1800’s by some local Ranchers or Cattlemen to give their “Cowboys” something to do or to make breaking the Horses, after round up, fun. Perhaps the one who broke the most horses in the shortest time was given extra pay or maybe that is when the first belt buckle prize ever came from.
With that being said there has been an on going battle over “The West’s National Sport” the “RODEO” and who had the first, the oldest, the oldest continuous rodeo, and longest continually running Rodeo. If you are getting confused already hold on to your Cowboy Hats because this is where it gets interesting. The story finally broke out in the public back in 1985 when Trivial Pursuit, a parlor game that people play, created a card that asked the question; “What rough-and-tumble Western sport was first formalized in Prescott, Arizona?” The answer on the card was the Rodeo. This upset Pecos, Texas which was claiming they had their Rodeo back in 1884, which now if you look into it says 1883. The battle raged because Pecos said they had held one back in 1883-1884 but their next one was not held until the late 1920’s. While Prescott, Arizona said they have had their Rodeo run continuously since 1888 even during the depression and during wars. Payson, Arizona then entered the picture claiming that they also have the oldest rodeo beginning in 1884. But those earlier contest in Payson were local Cowboys competing in Roping, and they were determined to not be organized. I will now introduce you to Canadian, Texas who claims they were the first. They held a two-day event (Roping was the main event) back in 1888 and held their 14th annual Rodeo in 1922.
Now I don’t know if Prescott did it possibly to end the battle or to just finalize a name but they submitted to the U.S. Patent Office to have “World’s Oldest Rodeo” registered. It was approved and the “World’s Oldest Rodeo” with the Service Mark number of 1,353,477 was issued on August 6th, 1985. This ended Prescott’s fight and let them move on. Payson, Arizona now has uses the “Oldest Continuous Rodeo”. Pecos, Texas has laid claim to the “Birthplace of Rodeo” and home of “World’s First Rodeo!” and today they are also using “The World’s First and the Largest Outdoor Rodeo in Texas”. Canadian, Texas claims, “First Rodeo held in Texas”.
- Do all Cowboys have sidekick Indians helping them?
A: No. But I don’t think we would get lost as much if we did. If you were referring to T.V. Cowboys the answer would still be NO. The Lone Ranger was the most famous Cowboy to have an Indian as a sidekick.
- Who would win in a gunfight between Doc Holiday and Billy the Kid?
A: This is one of those questions that we will collect a ton of e-mails about one way or another. No matter what our answer is here it will be wrong to half of you. But as you know I never shy away from a question so I will answer it.
Doc Holiday would win, if it were a quick draw match or a showdown in the middle of the street.
Billy the Kid would win if you were to tell them both to try and kill each other.
Now let me explain my answers.
Doc Holiday was a “Gunslinger” or a “Gunfighter” a “Quick-Draw Expert”. He would stand toe to toe with his adversaries and draw down on them. The quicker more accurate man would win and in this case it would be Doc Holiday. In this type of setting Doc Holiday would win against Billy the Kid, consistently.
Billy the Kid on the other hand was down right sadistic, earning him the reputation as, “The Baddest Boy of the Old West.” By the time he hit 21 he had killed 21 men. He was devious in the way he would do the killings. If the scenario were; “Both of you have two weeks to kill one another!” I believe Billy the Kid, with his “Devil-May-Care” attitude would end up killing Doc Holiday. It wouldn’t be anything for Billy to post himself on top of one of the buildings across the street from one of Doc’s favorite brothels (with his long rifle in hand, one of his preferred weapons of choice) and just wait (patience was a virtue back then) until Doc stumbled out of the Saloon and he would have killed him dead in the street.
Both of these men were smart and educated. Doc Holiday more than Billy the Kid of course but Billy had Street Smarts and a sharp wit that older men in his era didn’t have. Both of these men had there strong points and I believe they would have both won if they had their option on how to fight each other. Depending on which scenario you would want to use would decide which outcome would happen. I hope that answers your question, because “that is my final answer”.
- What is the Cowboys favorite horse to use?
A: His own of course.
But seriously, I do believe that the number one overall horse for the Cowboy would have to be the:
QUARTER HORSE The unique American quarter horse has evolved from a quarter-mile racer into the most diversified horse in the world. Although its origin can be traced to the colonial era, the American Quarter Horse gained a reputation as a faithful mount during the open range era, particularly during cattle drives to northern railroads. Any mix of this breed would also be considered in this.
A really close second would then be the:
PAINT Although all Paint Horses have a particular combination of white and any color of the equine spectrum: black, brown, bay, chestnut, sorrel, dun, palomino, buckskin, gray or roan, there markings can be any shape or size, and located anywhere on the body. While American Paint Horses come in a variety of colors there are only three distinct coat patterns: overo, tobiano, and tovero. All this, combined with an athletic ability and agreeable disposition, make the American Paint Horse an excellent investment in quality and surefooted on the trail. The markings on this Horse are what draw most of America to purchase them, but their temperament is what makes them purchase more than one.
My personal favorite “Buck” was ½ Quarter Horse ½ Arabian; he was truly a great horse. With his unfortunate passing I am now looking at getting the number two ranked Horse, a Paint.
- What is the preferred gun of choice for Cowboys?
A: I would have to say that the most recognized gun of choice is actually a Rifle and it would be the Winchester Lever Action in 30/30. As far as handguns go it would have to be the Ruger Blackhawk in any caliber or Colt in .44 caliber.
- Do you like cattle drives?
A: I have never paid to go on a “Cattle Drive” so I only have our “Cattle Drives” to reference too. Our “Cattle Drives” to me are work. I always have and always will love working with Cattle. So I guess I do like “Cattle Drives” even if it isn’t moving them across state lines anymore.
- Have you ever been to Texas?
A: Yes, if you live or have lived in the South Western United States at all then at one time or another you have to head to Texas for something. There is no avoiding this, don’t ask me why. It is just probably because they have bigger cities and the prices are cheaper.
- Do you like to hunt?
A: If you are asking me personally, do I like to hunt? The answer is yes. I love to go out hunting every chance I can get. There is nothing as exhilarating as going out in the woods and hunting or out in the field for me.
- Are you a good shot?
A: If you were asking if I personally am a good shot, then I would have to say yes I am. I have scored Expert in the military many times over and always had a standing bet with my platoon, if anyone can outscore me than I would give them the next day off. I have never given a day off to any of my soldiers for out-shooting me.
- Which is preferred to a Cowboy being at home or riding the range?
A: Wow, this is a great question. The answer is not as simple as choosing between the two. When the Cowboy is at home in his mind he is off in the distance riding the range. While the Cowboy is out riding the range the Cowboy is always thinking about being at home. So as you can see this isn’t an easy question to answer. It becomes complicated and I guess you would have to wonder if he is out on the range more than he is at home is he not preferring to go home more than he is wanting to ride and vise versa?
- Are all real-Cowboys dead?
A: No, all Cowboys are not dead! We are very much alive.
- Do all Cowboys wear bandanas?
A: No, once again, not all Cowboys wear bandanas. There are no two Cowboys exactly alike. When asking questions such as “Do All Cowboys” do this or that it will most always be a no.
- Do all Cowboys ride horses?
A: No, but they should. Some have traded the Horse for the “Modern Horse of Choice”, the Motorcycle.
- Do all Cowboys wear Cowboy boots?
A: No, but once again they should.
- Do all Cowboys smoke Marlboro?
A: No.
- Do all Cowboys go to the bar?
A: No. Ok I think we have had enough of the “Do all Cowboys” questions for a while.
- Why do most Cowboys have some facial hair?
A: This one is easy. A Cowboy who has been out on the trail for several days does not have the luxury or the will, I should say, to shave. After rolling in from a trail ride or cattle drive the olden days Cowboy would head in to town for release and to blow off steam. Only after that would they think about shaving.
- Who was the greatest Cowboy of all time?
A:
- Are Cowboy boots laced or not laced?
A: This is a design question that you are asking. Most Cowboy boots are
not laced but by design some are. The most famous laced up boots are created by Roper or Justin.
A2: Before someone sends in a question on why you would have lace up Cowboy Boots the answer is to keep them on their feet better. Imagine if you would a 2,000-pound angry animal coming straight at you and you are stuck in the middle of a mud puddle. If you were to step out quickly wearing standard Cowboy Boots your boot would come off. If you were wearing “Lace Up” Cowboy Boots the boots would stay on your feet and you would still be able to move out of the way.
A3: Another example is if you fall off your horse and your foot gets stuck in the stur-up you have and you are wearing pull on boot you will come out of it, and if you are wearing a lace up boot you will not be able to come out of the boot and potentially be seriouslly injured. Also a lace-up does not have a western heel (except double H lace up boot does have a western heel) which is easier for an inexperianced rider to put their foot through the sturrup.
- Do Cowboys wear socks?
A: Yes Cowboys do wear socks under their Cowboy Boots. I am sure that out there somewhere there has to be one or two that do not but for the majority they do wear socks.
- Do Cowboys wear steel-toed boots?
A: Yes Cowboys at times do wear steel-toed boots. There have even been Cowboy Boots with steel-toes made, to keep your Cowboy Boot look. Along the same lines there are Hard-Hats that are shaped like Cowboy Hats to go with your steel-toed boots. If you are working in a construction area you can still maintain your Cowboy appeal by purchasing both of these items.
- Do Cowboys always wear jeans?
A: When you ask this question and say always the answer will always be NO. But if you ask for the majority of the time the answer would be yes. A Cowboy does not live his entire life in Jeans. Sometimes they wear jean shorts or sweat pants or who knows what else they could wear.
- Do all Cowboys live in the country?
A: No sometimes we have Cowboys who move into the city and work and retire back out into the country lifestyle. We also have City Slickers who are born and raised in the city and never venture out to the country or woods unless they are out there hunting.
- Do all Cowboys attract good-looking Women?
A: I think I can talk for the majority of the Cowboys by saying that I believe most of our women are the best looking in the world. But you have to realize that this all has to go along with taste. I will not school you on saying all because it seems to do no good, but I will tell you for the majority that if you are dating someone or married to someone and you don’t think they are the best looking woman in the world then you shouldn’t be with them. After over 12 years of being with my wife I am still amazed that I am married to someone as beautiful as her. Is it because I was a Cowboy that attracted her to me? I don’t know but I won’t complain if it was.
- Do all Cowboys carry the same weapons?
A: NO. Cowboys today are exactly like the Cowboys of the past in reference to their guns. They get what they can afford. This is as straightforward as I can put it. If I were to make minimum wage and someone offered me a .22 handgun for $50 I would purchase it. If I made $100,000 a year I could go out and purchase the “Desert Eagle” in .50 caliber that I have been craving to acquisition for years.
- Why do most Cowboys have short hair?
A: I believe that you have stereotyped all Cowboys into a category that doesn’t exist. If all Cowboys hair would or could be the same it certainly wouldn’t be short unless they are in the Military currently. So perhaps you live in a Military town? I don’t know. Anyways the answer is they all don’t have short hair. The exact opposite would be true for olden day Cowboys and even Modern Cowboys. Two months out on the trail you don’t have much of a chance to go to the Barbershop and get a nice trim. So that is why once the Cattle Drives were over you would see long haired, scruffily looking Cowboys in the Saloon, because they cared more about blowing off some steam than getting a haircut or a shave. Today it is a personal choice on how long your hair is. Wearing a Cowboy Hat with long hair does seem to make you sweat a lot more than if you had short hair, but sweatin’ is all part of the Cowboys job.
- Why do most Cowboys ride into the Sunset?
A: You guys astonish me! That is a great question. Cowboys get up prior to the Sun rising in the East and they do not go to bed until the Sun has long been set in the West. The days were and still are long for the Cowboy. Photographers have for years been taken back by the colors and hues of the setting sun. When the Sun would start to set the Cowboy would start his journey home. Seeing these photographers would snap pictures of the Cowboy with the gorgeous skies illuminating all around them. This made for some alluring photographs that have been duplicated a million times over. It became a set standard when a story was written or produced about the Cowboys daily life; it made a great touching ending to sad or long journey or adventure. It showed that the Cowboy was on a lone quest that never ended.
- Do all Cowboys know how to take care of cows?
A: I would have to answer this question with a YES, even though I don’t like your “ALL COWBOYS” question. To be an actual true to life Cowboy you would have to know how to tend the Cattle, because you work with Cattle everyday.
- Do all Cowboys go to Rodeo’s?
A: No not all Cowboys go to Rodeo’s. Some of them go to the movies, state fairs, NASCAR races, hometown races, Wagon Runs, mudding, trap shooting, and a million other things that normal American People do.
- Why do all Cowboys hunt?
A: First things first, all Cowboys do not hunt. The majority of Cowboys hunt because when America was fist settled by the Pilgrims they had to be self-reliant and harvest their own food. When the westward movement began in the 1800’s, those who were seeking Gold, Fame, Land, or whatever else they wanted such as adventure also had to be very self reliant and they too harvested their own food. Today with the modern big business’ growing food and placing it in supermarkets the need for harvesting your own animals is no longer needed but it has still been pasted on from Father to Son for generations. Hunting is a great pastime and a great escape from the scrambling, hectic world that we live in today. Stepping back in time and fending for yourself and harvesting your family’s dinner are a rewarding experience. People always surround themselves with other people who dress, act, have the same morals, and enjoy doing the same things. The Cowboy is no different and as time has pasted and traditions have been pasted down it was inevitable for hunting to be pasted down; from Father to Son and from Friend to Friend.
- Why do most Cowboys and Rednecks own 4x4 pickup trucks?
A: You would also own a four wheel drive vehicle if you worked out on the open range where it rains and mud or sand is prevalent. There is nothing worse than having to walk home after tending Cattle all day long because you got your truck stuck. Working off the beaten path you end up in locations far away from the highway and you could simply lock in the four-wheel drive and get yourself out of most messes. This is why most Cowboys and Rednecks own 4X4’s. The other reason is that a lot of people love to go “Muddin” which is a recreational past time of slipping your truck into some mud and spinning your tires trying to get your truck and your friends as muddy as you can.
- How many Cowboys actually own Horses?
A: This is an almost impossible to answer but in an attempt to I did some research and it has a degree of error to it. But one recent survey from the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association (APPMA), the 2005-2006 National Pet Owners Survey (NPOS) show pet ownership is currently at its highest level in American History! Stampeding onto the survey for the first time ever is the
tracking of Horses. Four percent of U.S. households own a Horse with three percent boarding Horses at home and one percent keeping Horses outside of their home. Eighty percent of Horse owners also have a dog (go figure). The demographics indicate that the person most responsible for purchasing pet products is a 46-year-old woman. That’s right it is our Cowgirls that are buying all of our pets and all of their products. Either that or they are the only ones at home answering the phone for this survey. Furthermore it tells us four percent of all of America owns horses. Those are some really impressive figures.
- Do all Cowboys smoke?
A: See Answer #17
- Do Cowboys prefer Leather Jeans or Blue Jeans?
A: LOL, Leather Pants? Well I am going to take a stab in the dark on this one and say that it is by far Blue Jeans. I do not know one Cowboy who wears Leather Pants for running errands. Chaps on the other hand are mostly (not all) made out of Leather and I know a ton of people who wear them. Now if you want to talk about Cowgirls wearing Leather pants, I must admit that most, not all, love the look of it. It is very acceptable for a Cowgirl to show up in a nice tight fitting pair of “Leathers” to almost any occasion.
- Are all Cowboys good with their hands?
A: Most of them are that is why the decision to go into Ranching was made. Cowboys work alone most of the time and have to become or already are self self-sufficient.
- What color Bandana is most chosen by the Cowboy?
A: Cowboy’s mostly purchases Handkerchiefs or Bandana’s in the color Red, with a simple plaid or floral design on it. This was done because a Cowboy would bleed and have to use it, sometimes, to wrap the cut and if you use another color it would get stained with the blood.
- Does hat size matter to the Cowboy?
A: If you mean does the brim size matters I would have to say yes because it must look good on you or else you wouldn’t wear it. Mostly Crown and Brim sizes are categorized in such a way that they are intended for certain people, i.e. Ranchers, Cowboys, Cattlemen are common names for hat shapes and sizes. See our Western Hat section on our Merchandise page, which is still under construction (our apologies for those who are waiting for it to finish). That page will describe several styles and whom they are intended for.
Also to answer you original question if the Cowboy isn’t sized for your head you are not going to be able to wear it, it would be either too small or too big and fall over your ears.
- What type of boots do Cowboys prefer?
A:
Are you serious? Cowboy Boots!
- How long can a horse be ridden without stopping?
A: This depends on which breed of horse you are referring to.
- Can Cowboys swim?
A: Most Cowboys are outdoorsmen and I would have to say that the majority of them could swim. But there are always exceptions to the entire group and some sink like rocks.
- Can all Cowboys sing?
A: Yes all Cowboys can sing, unless they have had their voice box removed or damaged. But asking if all Cowboys can carry a tune I would have to say no. I have heard some really bad songs in my time. The common singing comes from pushing cattle around on cattle drives. The Cowboy would sing while driving the cattle due to the fact that a stampede was more dangerous than a natural disaster. The Cowboy would sing day in and day out. Sometimes at night while the cows were settling down an unknown noise would spook them, the Cowboy would rise out of the bedroll and begin to sing. This was done because the cattle had grown accustomed to the singing and would soon settle back down for the night, because the singing had mellowed the cows.
- If so, do they all sing country?
A: No just because a person is a Cowboy doesn’t mean that they only sing Country songs. There are people who like “Kid Rock”, “I wanna be a Cowboy Baby”. That is not a Country Western song but it has to do with Cowboys and people like it.
- I saw a Cowboy talking on a cell phone is he a real Cowboy?
A: You have to look at the era that we are in right now. We have magnificent modern electronics (MME) and yet we can select which way we want to live (If you want to live in a house with no electricity and get paid $5 a month, drop me an email. I have a job for you).
I have a couple of questions for you.
Did most Cowboys in the 1880’s have electricity?
The answer is NO!
But do you have electricity? Yes or else you wouldn’t be on this website looking at my answers. Electricity is a great modern wonder that I sure wouldn’t want to live without. Today Ropes and Stirrups have been replaced with Cell phones and Sunglasses.
Would the Cowboys of yesteryear have used any of these wondrous marvels?
Yes they would have. So, YES, you were looking at a Real Cowboy!
- What does it mean when a Cowboy gives his hat to a lady?
A: Your questions sort of took me back because I can answer the question so quickly that I started to second-guess myself as to the legitimate answers I had. So I started to research the Etiquette's of the hat itself. Which we all know started over in Britain. To start with the hat is tipped more often than it is given. So I started to look into why is it tipped in the first place? Then I continued on from there. I hope that all of my rambling will make sense to you.
When a gentleman "dons" his hat to leave or "doffs" his hat to a lady, his actions are being described by two British colloquialisms that come from contractions of the phrases "do on" meaning "to do", and the Middle English "doffen", which became "don off" meaning "to do off"!
Hats are tipped, (or doffed) slightly lifting the hat off your forehead, when meeting a lady (remove your hat if you stop to talk), or to "say" to anyone, male or female - thank you, excuse me, hello, goodbye, you're welcome or how do you do. This is done even in today's modern age.
Tipping of the hat is a conventional gesture of politeness. This hat tipping custom has the same origin as military saluting, which came from the raising of medieval Knights face visors to show friendliness.
Hats are worn less now, but at the turn of the 20th century, all adults wore hats whenever they left the house. It was a matter of good personal hygiene, since hats were a protection from industrial dirt.
Hats are removed when inside, except for places that are akin to public streets, like lobbies, corridors, and crowded elevators (non-residential). In a public building (where there are no apartments) the elevator is considered a public area.
· You may choose to remove your hat in a public elevator, but in the presence of a lady your hat must be removed.
· A gentleman takes off his hat and holds it in his hand when a lady enters the elevator in any building that can be classified as a dwelling such as an apartment house or hotel. He puts it on again in the corridor.
· "The true aim of politeness, is to make those with whom you associate as well satisfied with themselves as possible. ...It does whatever it can to accommodate their feelings and wishes in social intercourse."
Further Etiquette :
o Stand up when a lady stands
o Assist a lady with her chair when she sits down or stands, especially when at a table or when the chairs are small and light
o Offer a lady your seat if no others are available
o Retrieve dropped items for a lady
o Open doors for a lady
o Help a lady with her coat, cloak, shawl, etc.
o Offer to bring a lady refreshments if they are available
o Offer your arm to escort a lady (with whom you are acquainted) into or out of a building or a room at all social events, and whenever walking on uneven ground
o Remove your hat when entering a building
o Lift your hat to a lady when she greets you in public (Merely touching the brim or a slight "tip" of the hat was very rude)
(Now-a-days it is proper to touch the brim of your hat!)
In today’s society the Cowboy Hat is still used to communicate different messages.
· A man can give a Hat to a woman if they are to start dating, almost like a class ring.
· If a Hat is given to a woman who they are dating and she accepts it they are to be married.
· If in a Bar and a Hat is given to a woman and if she accepts it and she wears it that means the woman has agreed to go home with the Hat owner.
I hope that this helps you answer any questions that you may have about Cowboy Hats and giving them to woman.

- I remember seeing the Lone Rangers Creed somewhere can you post that for me?
A: I would be more than honored to post the Lone Rangers Creed. I wish more people would adapt to his way of thinking and we would all get along so much better
"I believe that to have a friend, a man must be one.
That all men are created equal and that everyone has within himself the power to make this a better world.
That God put the firewood there but that every man must gather and light it himself.
In being prepared physically, mentally, and morally to fight when necessary for that which is right.
That a man should make the most of what equipment he has.
That 'This government, of the people, by the people and for the people' shall live always.
That men should live by the rule of what is best for the greatest number.
That sooner or later... somewhere...somehow... we must settle with the world and make payment for what we have taken.
That all things change but truth, and that truth alone, lives on forever.
In my Creator, my Country, my fellow man."

- What do jeans with the Confederate Flag on the back pockets mean?
A: The Confederate Flag is once again on the rise in popularity showing Southern Roots or Country Roots. This is in no way a symbol of any hate group, or racial discrimination. The exact opposite is true! Perhaps it is a Country Pride or Cowboy / RedNeck Pride symbol of modern country people, which is not a racial thing but a Pride thing. If you are timid in anyway I would suggest that you do not purchase these jeans. You may get some die-hard fanatic out there who would start a fight with you just for having a Confederate Flag out in public.
- Do Cowboys like Football and if so what Teams?
A: Cowboys do like Football; some of their favorite teams out there are the Dallas Cowboys, Denver Broncos, Indianapolis Colts, and the New England Patriots.
In all sports everyone has rivals and the Cowboys rivals are the Oakland Raiders, Washington Redskins, and the Kansas City Chiefs! Watch out for these guys.
Before we receive hate mail on this answer reread the list in bullet format.

- What breed of dog is the cowboy's favorite?
A: This is always going to be a personal answer for each Cowboy. But to help you out I will talk about three breeds.
Blue Heelers: Which earned the nickname of Australian Cattle Dogs are the first ones that come to mind. They have been pictured on Ranches across America for hundreds of years, but are most famous in Australia for herding sheep. This breed is also known as the Blue Heeler, Queensland Heeler, Hall's Heeler & the American Cattle Dog. These dogs herd livestock by nipping at their legs or “heels”. The versatile & fearless Australian Cattle Dog is the result of 6 decades of cross breeding. Some of the dogs that were bred to get this highly intelligent dog include the Red Bobtail, Scotland's Blue Merle Collie and the Dingo. Wary by nature, these dogs must be introduced to other animals and people early in their development. They are highly intelligent & very alert dogs. This breed weighs 35 to 45 lbs. & stands 17-20" at the shoulders.
German Shepherd: The first one known as the German Shepherd Dog, registered in the US was "Queen of Switzerland" in 1908. During WWI, the AKC renamed it the "Shepherd Dog" but renamed it in 1933 back to "German Shepherd Dog". After World War I these dogs were named the Alsatian. Today they are known by the correct name of German Shepherd Dog. German Shepherds are powerful and well muscled with a slightly elongated form. The height at the shoulders is 21 ½" to 25 ½". These dogs are all around working, herding and service dogs. They are steady of nerve and completely good-natured as well as alert. They need frequent grooming due to a double coat. They make great watchdogs and home companions.
Rottweiler: Although you may be shocked that the Rottweiler is in our list it was bred with herding dogs and that is how it came into existence. Americans found the Rottweiler and bred it as a fighting dog and it has gotten a bad reputation from this. But a family Rottweiler and one that has grown up and been trained around Cattle is a perfect Cattle dog. These dogs have been known throughout Europe since the time of the Roman Empire. This breed was further developed in Germany where it was bred with other herding dogs to create a very strong dog. The Rottweiler measures an average of 26 inches at the shoulder. Its thick coat is usually black with tan markings. Some training is required. It is very loyal to its family
- Do you have to wear your shirt tucked in?
A: No there is nothing in writing that says that your Cowboy shirt has to be tucked in. Just go to any bar on a Friday night and watch the Cowboys who first walk in all prim and proper and by closing time the shirts are unbuttoned and un-tucked. This is the exact same at work do you think that a bull is going to care if you re-tuck your shirt after you have shimmed up and over the corral? No he won’t care one way or another. If you were in town it would be proper to keep your shirt tucked in, this would also allow everyone to view your belt buckle.
- What is a Rodeo Draft?
A: The Rodeo Draft Horse Pulling Competition uses Draft Horses like the ones you see on Budweiser® commercials. They pull a wagon just like Monster Truck Pull Competitions. If you have never seen one of these take some time this year to stop by a Rodeo who is offering this, it will be worth the drive.
- Do most Ranches have bunk-houses were the Cowboys stay or do the Cowboys have to rent an apartment or something?
A: Back in the Wild-Wild-West bunkhouses were the normal way to sleep Cowboys, now with prices the way they are and people’s stand of living it is not a common practice to even own a bunkhouse. With that being said let me tell you that some Ranches today still use older houses to bunk Ranch-hands as part of there pay, but for a majority most Cowboys live in town or around the Ranch.
- What is the meaning/significance or symbolism behind the image of Cowboy boots upside down on a fence post? You see it iconically in cartoons and sometimes even in real life.
A: There have been several e-mails asking what the purpose of hanging boots on fence posts. This has become a difficult question to answer. We have found several answers to this question.
One answer was it was to show people that the Rancher or Farmer was home. This is almost impossible to believe because who would walk down to their house without their boots on?
The Second answer we found was it was created only for picture purposes. This is very plausible. It does make a great photograph.
The Third answer we found was the scent of the boots would keep away Coyotes.
The Fourth Answer we found was it was created when a Rancher or Farmer passed away. It was a sign of respect, for the Farmer/Rancher. This is a great idea and we would like to believe that this is the reason it was actually started. The Rancher/Farmer/Cowboy this would become the ultimate sign of respect. This is the answer we here at Cowboy Crew will promote. We will ask that all Cowboys promote this answer, each of you deserve the respect that this shows.
- In the movie Broken Trail, Gilpin says “Well wheel them around once and then send them on their way”. They ran them around a wagon train. To confuse them? Why?
A:
- What exact brands of cowboy boots would you actually find being worn on the trail?
A: This is impossible to answer, each Cowboy prefers his own brand.
- Why is it considered bad luck to place a cowboy hat on the bed?
A: Superstition will answer this question. It has been believed that it is bad luck to place your hat upside down, on beds, on a table, or for a stranger to place it on their head.
Superstition is a belief or notion, not based on reason or knowledge.
- Could you tell me the reason for cowboys putting there boots upside down on the fenceposts?
A: See answer 126.

- Should a cowboy take his hat off when he is inside a restaurant?
A: The answer to this question is simple, but will have two parts. *Yes you should take your hat off while in a restaurant.
*Unless your in a restaurant that caters to the Cowboy. A Steak House for example you would not be expected to take your hat off, as a matter of fact you are encouraged to keep it on. Also if you go into a restaurant and choose to sit on the patio you should keep your hat on.
- What are the bushes in Cowboy Movies called?
A: If I understand your question you want to know what the bushes in Movies are called. Well here is a couple of answers depending on which bushed you are talking about.
